Every October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month brings a simple reminder: paying attention to your body matters. It isn't about fear or perfection. It's about getting familiar with what's normal for you, so you can notice when something changes.
Why awareness matters
Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the U.S., and the earlier a change is noticed and checked, the more options a person tends to have. Screening guidelines vary by age and personal history, so the best step is to talk with your doctor about what's right for you, including when to start mammograms and how often to have clinical exams.
Get to know your normal
Many people find it helpful to build a regular habit of checking in with their bodies. Choose a time that's easy to remember, such as after a shower or on the first day of each month, and pay attention to how your breasts usually look and feel. Things worth mentioning to a doctor include a new lump, changes in size or shape, skin dimpling or redness, nipple changes, or unusual discharge. Most changes turn out to be harmless, but it's always better to have them checked than to wait and wonder.
Make it part of your routine
The easiest habits are the ones that fit into your day. Set a monthly reminder on your phone, schedule your annual check-up while you're thinking about it, or invite a friend or family member to do the same. Talking about it openly makes it feel less intimidating, and it's a nice way to look out for each other.
Comfort is part of caring for yourself
What you wear every day should feel good. A bra that digs, pinches, or needs constant adjusting is worth replacing. Look for soft, stretchy fabrics, wire-free support that doesn't press or irritate, and seamless construction that feels smooth against your skin. Sizing changes over time, so it's worth re-checking even if you've worn the same size for years. To be clear, the right bra won't change your health risk, but feeling comfortable in your own body is a good place to start.
This October, take a few minutes for yourself
Book the appointment, set the reminder, talk to someone you care about. Small steps add up.
